But this complaint is grave. I have tried to trace out its foundation. The words of Mr. Thomson are almost identical with a letter by Mr. Gibbons which I enclose. This is the only complaint I ever heard that Mr. Gibbons ever made.

I send herewith copies of three letters. I also send (the original having been lost) a letter by Mr Stageland to myself stating the purport of his inquiry, and stating what afterwards occurred.
